What to Do If Your Phone Gets Wet
Accidents happen — maybe your phone took an unexpected dive into the sink or got caught in the rain. Whatever the case, acting fast can make all the difference. Here’s what you should do right away:
1. Remove It from the Water Immediately
Every second counts. The longer your phone stays submerged, the deeper the liquid seeps into its internal components.
2. Turn It Off — and Leave It Off
Powering down your device helps prevent short circuits that can cause permanent damage.
3. Take Off the Case
Remove any covers or protective cases so moisture doesn’t get trapped inside.
4. Remove the Battery and Cards (If You Can)
If your phone allows it, take out the battery, SIM card, and memory card to help everything dry faster.
5. Gently Dry the Surface
Use a clean, dry cloth or paper towel to blot away excess moisture — avoid rubbing, as this can push water deeper into the device. If it was completely submerged, you can gently use a vacuum (on low power) around the phone’s ports and openings to draw out additional moisture.
6. Skip the Sun and the Hairdryer
Heat can do more harm than good. Instead, keep your phone in a cool, dry place.
7. Forget the Rice Trick — Try Silica Gel Instead
That old “phone in rice” method isn’t as effective as people think. Instead, place your phone in a zip-top bag filled with silica gel packets (the kind you find in new shoe boxes or electronics packaging). Leave it sealed for 24–48 hours to draw out moisture.
8. Test It After It’s Fully Dry
Once you’ve waited at least a full day, try switching your phone on. If it doesn’t power up immediately, charge it completely before testing again.
